Our Top Roof Lantern Cleaning Tips!

As COVID-19 restrictions are starting to ease and we are slowly but surely making our way out of lockdown, the warmer weather has decided to grace us with its presence.

Some of our customers are wondering how to keep their roof lantern clean, so that it can let in the maximum amount of light, into their home.

Unfortunately, roof lanterns are vulnerable to the elements, vehicle pollution, and everybody’s favourite, bird droppings.

Here at Sovereign, we want to ensure your roof lantern is in great condition.

Allow us to share a few of our top-secret tips to ensure your roof lantern will be spotless.

Check On your Roof Lantern

The easiest part about cleaning your roof lantern is ensuring that the glass is in the best condition it can possibly be.

We recommend checking your roof lanterns glass regularly so you are aware of any build-up of dirt and debris that may cause the glass to look dirty and block out natural light.

It is therefore important to regularly inspect your roof lanterns glass to assess if any cleaning needs to be done.

Indoor Cleaning Tips

To appropriately clean the interior frame and glass of your roof lantern, it is important to clear any furniture or other items from underneath the lantern.

We then recommend placing a cover of plastic or cloth material on the floor beneath the roof lantern (an old bed sheet will do just fine!) preventing any potential dirt from landing on your floor.

Use a step ladder to enable you to reach the glass of the roof lantern, however, be sure to have somebody to hold the ladder to prevent any risk of injury.

Use a feather duster to swipe around the corners and remove any dust, dirt and cobwebs that may have gathered.

To clean the glass, use a soft sponge or cloth alongside a trusted glass or window cleaning product to gently wipe the glass with warm water.

However, be sure to not use any harsh chemicals as this could damage the pane of glass and potentially leave streaks.

It is recommended to do this once every two-three months

Outdoor Cleaning Tips

Use a sturdy ladder, along with a sturdy person to hold the ladder.

Always be careful of where your feet are and don’t put any weight on the glass.

Once you are near the roof lantern, remove any large debris such as grime, leaves and moss.

Clean the frame using warm water with a soft cloth or sponge and a trusted glass cleaning product.

Do your best to not apply too much soap, as this could potentially interfere with the roof lantern’s self-cleaning technology.

It is also recommended to clean your roof lantern when it is cloudy or dull to prevent the windows from drying too quickly and leaving stains and streaks.

Neglecting your roof lantern can cause some interior issues such as damp to arise, so be sure to clean it every two or three months to prevent any problems in the future.
